高中英语学科辅导：中学教材中follow的用法

英语中的follow是一个常见动词，初学者一碰到follow往往喜欢把它汉译成“跟”。实际上，follow有好几种不同的词义和用法。仅高中英语教材第三册第20单元课文“Gandhi”中就几次出现follow的用法，且有不同的汉语表达法。初中英语教材中也有类似的情形。现结合中学教材对动词follow的常见用法与汉语表达法作一小结。

1. follow的本意是“跟随，接着”等，用来表示时间、次序上的先后，相当于go/come after。例如：

Many other struggles followed. 以后又进行了许多次别的斗争。

The students followed Uncle Wang to see the other machines. 学生们跟着王叔叔去着另外几台机器。

In the years that followed ,Marx kept on studying English and using it. 在随后的几年中，马克思继续学习和使用英语。

We watched the crowds following Gandhi on his walk to the sea. 我们注视着人群跟着甘地走到大海边。

Anything to follow?相当于:What will you have to follow? 接下去还要点什么?

There was a terrible noise following the sudden burst of light.突然闪光之后紧接着是一声可怕的声音。

2. follow可用来表示“遵循，依照行事，照，仿效”等意思。例如:

Follow your teacher’s instructions. 遵照你们老师的指令做。

It looks as if it hasn’t been washed following the instructions. 这看上去好像没有按照说明来洗。

Generally speaking，newspapers follow the American way，but conference reports and schoolbooks use English spelling. 一般说来,报纸采用美国英语的拼写，会议报告和教科书采用英国英语的拼写。

Mohandas Gandhi was born in India in 1869 and was married at the age of 13，following local custom. 英汉达斯·甘地于1849年生于印度，按照当地习俗,他在13岁时就结婚了。

To be a good listener,you’d better follow the three rules. 要当一名好的听众，你最好遵循这三条规则。

I think it is important to follow your interests and your abilities. 我想重要的是按照你的兴趣和能力去办。

3. follow可用来表示“理解，领会,听清楚”等，相当于understands。例如:

Do you follow me? 你听懂我的话了吗?

He spoke so fast that I couldn’t follow him. 他讲得太快了，我听不懂。

4. follow的形容词形式为following,它的意思为“接着的,以下的”等。例如:

Read the following passage as quickly as you can and find out the answers to those questions. 尽快阅读下列短文，找出那些问题的答案。

To examine skills and abilities still further，ask yourself this question:in the following three areas 一 skills with people，skills with information or skills with things — which are your best skills? 为了进一步检你的技能和能力，请你自己回答以下问题:在和人打交道的技能、获得信息的技能、处理事务的技能这三个方面中，你在哪个方面最有优势?

5. following还可以用作介词，作“在之后，经过”解，构成介词短语，在句中通常作状语，表示时间。例如:

Following this，60000 Indians，including Gandhi，were put in prison. 在这个事件之后，有6万印度人，包括甘地在内，被投入监狱。

Following the speech，there will be a few minutes for questions. 在演讲之后，将会有几分钟的提问时间。

6. follow构成的词组与惯用法有as follows, followed by等。例如:

Next week we’re going to clean the school as follows. 下周我们将按以下安排打扫学校。

The visitor came in，(who was)followed by a group of young people. 参观者走了进来,他后面跟着一群年轻人。
