几个特殊的形容词

英语中的形容词，一般说来，都是既可作定语又可作表语的，但也有例外的情形。有一类形容间只能作表语而不能作定语，如:ill(生病的)，asleep(熟睡的)，afraid(怕的),alive(活着的). alone(单独的)，worth(值得……的),unfit不合适的),ready(准备好的),glad(高兴的),scarce(缺乏的)等等。下面举正、误数例说明。

误:He is an ill man.

正:He is ill.

误:This is an asleep baby.

正:This baby is asleep.

误:She is an alone girl.

正:She is alone。

另一类形容词却只能作定语，而不能作表语，如wooden(木制的),little(小的), magic (魔术的),golden(金色的)等等。也举正、误数例说明。

误:This gun is wooden.

正:This is a wooden gun./This gun is made of wood.

误:This boy is little.

正:This is a little boy.

所以，我们在了解形容词的一般特点的同时，还须掌握它的特殊性。这样，才能避免遣词造句中的错误。

“精通”的英语表达法知多少

汉语中“精通”的概念在英语中有很多表达方式。现将常用的一些归纳如下：

1.以“be+adj.+prep.“来表达。主要有:be clever at，be good at，be strong in，be proficient at(in).be skillful in(at.)，be famous for, be perfect in，be very useful at，be learned in，be thoroughly familiar with。例如:

He is perfect in English. 他精通英语。

John is skillful in carpentry. 约翰擅长木工。

2.以“be+past p.十prep.”来表达。它们是:be skilled in(at)，be accomplished in，be well acquainted with,be(well)versed in, be deeply read in.例如:

The young man is(well)versed in mathematics. 这位年轻人精通数学。

She is deeply read in the classics. 她精通古典文学。

3.以“be+n.+prep.”来表达。主要是：be excellence at(in)，be a famous hand at，be perfection in，be a oner at，be a good hand(或quite a good hand)at。例如:

She is a oner at French. 她精通法语。

He is excellence at(in)many forms of sport. 他擅长多种运动。

4, 以“have+a/an+adj.+n.+prep.”来表达。主要有:have a good grasp(或command)of，have a good(或a perfect，an intimate)knowledge of，have an intimate acquaintance with。例如：

He has a good command of modern Chinese literature. 他精通中国当代文学。

This old professor has an intimate knowledge of Greek philosophy. 这位老教授精通希腊哲学。

此外，还有其他一些表达法:be well up in(on)，become quite expert at(in)，to master，to make oneself master of,to gain the mastery of，be at home in，to familiarize oneself with，to excel in(at)，to perfect oneself in(或to perfect one’s+n.)，have…at one’s finger ends(或fingers’ ends)，to acquire proficiency in，to understand thoroughly，to acquire a quite sound knowledge of等。例如:

This little boy excels in(at)chess. 这个小男孩擅长下棋。

It’s not easy to acquire proficiency in a foreign language. 要熟练地掌握一门外语不是容易的事。
